FAQ

How can we help?
Where is nụlọ made?

Each nụlọ is made by hand in Berlin, with much consideration for sustainability. In a listed aroma candle manufactory, the team produces various aroma candles based on natural essential oils and renewable rapeseed wax with manual and semi-automated wax melters.  New scent compositions are also created here with great dedication.

How are your scents created?

We develop our scent compositions ourselves. For this purpose, we have about 90 different essential oils at our disposal, from which an infinite number of possibilities arise. Our inspiration for this is nature, our everyday life, our memories. Our nụlọ 2, for example, contains Märkisches Kiefernöl, an essential oil extracted from the needles of the local pine here. It has many health benefits and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve well-being. The scent for a new candle is chosen only after it has convinced us for several days. It would certainly be easier to use ready-made fragrance blends already available from specially trained perfumers. But only through our own creations are our candles authentic, at least that's how we see it.

What makes your scents so natural?

In the development of our fragrance compositions, we use only selected, high-quality essential oils obtained from purely natural source materials. This way, we ensure that our product has a high quality standard. We place particular emphasis on quality and origin when selecting oils. Sustainability is very important to us, so we pay attention to fair and controlled trade as well as short transport routes. Our pine oil is sourced from the surrounding area of the Mark Brandenburg, lavender oil from France and rosemary oil from Italy.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated volatile essences extracted from plants and are responsible for the pleasant scent of the plants. For example, if you walk through an herb garden and touch the leaves of peppermint, rosemary and other plants, you will notice the scent of essential oils. Or when you walk in the forest, especially on hot days or after rain, you will notice the wonderful scent of coniferous trees, which also comes from the essential oils in spruce, fir and other trees. You may have noticed that when you squeeze the peel of an orange or lemon, a liquid comes out. This is the essential oils of the citrus fruits.

How to extract essential oils?

Essential oils are extracted directly from plants and there are usually two methods used: Cold pressing and steam distillation. Cold pressing is particularly suitable for citrus fruits, as the oil sits directly in the peels and can be extracted by squeezing. In order to obtain larger quantities, several peels are pressed at the same time and then the oil obtained is separated from other fruit components in a centrifuge. These cold-pressed oils are available, for example, from lemon, grapefruit, bergamot, or lime.

Steam distillation is the most common method and is used for most plants with essential oils, such as herbs (e.g. peppermint or rosemary), flowers (e.g. rose petals or lavender flowers), needles, twigs (e.g. Swiss stone pine or juniper) and roots (e.g. ginger). The plant material is placed in a cauldron full of water, whereby the heating produces steam, which dissolves the essential oils from the plant parts and takes them into the dome of the cauldron. The steam is then cooled and the liquid obtained is drained, allowing the essential oil to separate from the plant water (hydrolate) and be skimmed off.

How do essential oils affect me?

Essential oils are small, natural powerhouses with a wide variety of active ingredients that can have a positive effect on the body and psyche. Some essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties, such as needle oils and citrus oils. Other essential oils are particularly relaxing, like lavender oil, and others stimulate circulation, like rosemary oil. In addition, essential oils can have a calming effect and can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration and increase energy.

What is the aromatherapy approach?

The natural power of essential oils influences our senses through their scents and changes our perception. The scent molecules go directly to the limbic system of our brain, where our feelings are localized. The intensity of the aromas can change the way we feel and have an impact on our body.

Why don't all candle manufacturers use essential oils?

Natural essential oils are sensitive and expensive. They are subject to natural variations depending on the growing area, weather conditions and harvest times. This makes it difficult to achieve a planned fragrance note, but this is of great importance to large companies. Synthetic fragrances are much cheaper in comparison - and this is the significant factor for large companies. We appreciate the natural variations of fragrance as the charm of nature. Just like good wines that do not smell and taste the same every year, these oils make them interesting and special.

Why do you use rapeseed wax?

Natural, vegan & pollutant-free Rapeseed is a rapidly renewable plant and completely biodegradable. The cultivation areas for rapeseed are mainly located in Europe, thus ensuring a regional supply with a favorable CO₂ balance. Our candles are made of certified, genetically untreated rapeseed oil and a small amount of coconut wax, which makes the wax supple. Complete melting of the top layer of wax ensures even burning and optimal fragrance diffusion. Canola wax is our preferred choice, both for the environment, health and burn time. Although canola wax has many benefits, there are also some challenges in its use. It can be difficult to handle in use and it can take longer to make an optimal candle. It's important to be patient and keep experimenting. Compared to soy wax, canola wax also has a slight inherent odor when burning, but we view this odor as a positive recognition feature.

Which wicks do you use?

We use our crackling wooden wick. The wooden wick is a natural alternative to conventional wicks made of cotton and offers several advantages. A particular advantage of our wooden wick is that it comes from southern Germany and consists of one piece of birch wood. This has not been compressed and treated with chemical ingredients, which gives it its individual grain. When it burns down, it crackles, which is reminiscent of a cozy campfire and the natural essential oils can develop better, since there is no strong heat development and the oils do not burn. There is also no need to shorten the wood wick, as it burns down and burns out quite slowly. In summary, this means:

  • Natural birchwood veneer
  • Crackling campfire effect
  • Light glow - no bright flame
  • Unfolding of the natural essential oils in the room
  • No soot development
  •

Can I continue to use the candle glass?

    Yes, PLEASE and absolutely!

We put a lot of time and effort into designing our candle glasses and think it would be a shame to just throw them away. Use them as a vase or as a tea light holder. However, it is important to clean the jar thoroughly before using it again to remove any residue from the candle.

You can use your nụlọ jar again and again in the future, filling it with different scents by using our new refills. This way, you'll not only help protect the environment, but also save money. Discover the diverse world of flavors with our refills (coming soon).

How long do your candles burn?

The burning time for the 150g candle is 30 hours, while the burning time for the 55g candle is 20 hours.

What can I do to get the most out of my candle?

High quality candles want to be cared for to achieve an even and beautiful burn. An important factor in this is letting them burn long enough, especially for wider candles. The first lighting is what is known as the "memory burn", where the candle remembers how far out it has gone. Therefore, it is imperative to let it burn the first time at least until the entire surface is liquid. Otherwise, only a tunnel is formed in the center of the candle and unused wax remains on the edge, which affects the burning time and light. It is therefore advisable to always let the candle melt all the way to the edge once. Generally, a burning time of 2 to 3 hours is optimal.

Does the candle smell even when it is not lighted? And if so, for how long?

The essential oils in our candles are evenly distributed, which makes them spread a pleasant scent even without lighting. This is due to the fact that the fragrance molecules dissolve on the surface and are released into the air. However, when the candle is lit, more fragrance molecules are released, resulting in a stronger fragrance intensity. If the candle is left unlit for a longer period of time, the fragrance on the surface will gradually weaken. At the latest then it makes sense to relight your nụlọ to create a new layer with aroma.

Are there product or scent samples?

Unfortunately, we don't offer classic scent samples, but our mini candles are great for trying out different scents. You can buy our 4 different mini-nụlọ's either individually or in a set to test all scents.
